Prompt Engineering Fundamentals - An Introduction to the Common Prompting Techniques

It guides the LLM to think step-by-step by providing few-shot examples that explain the reasoning process. This method is particularly effective for models with around 100 billion parameters or more.
Unlike few-shot prompting, which provides examples of what the LLM should do, CoT prompting shows the step-by-step thinking from start to finish, aiding in “reasoning” and producing more detailed answers.
Tree of Thoughts (ToT) Prompting
The Tree of Thoughts prompting method uses a tree-like structure to evaluate each step of the reasoning process. This allows the model to assess whether each step will lead to an optimal answer. If a reasoning path is deemed undesirable, the model abandons it and explores another branch until it reaches a sensible result.
ToT prompting is similar to Microsoft’s AutoGen, where multiple experts with different system messages interact in a group. It’s like prompting the LLM to debate itself, point out flaws in its reasoning, provide a response, and then critique that response, all in a single prompt.
